Sphinx was made about 5 thousand years ago. It is a mythical creature - 21 meters high and 74 meters long. The name "Sphinx" means "vivid picture".
The statue has got a human head and a body of a lion. A legend says that it resembles Pharaoh Chefren's face. Sphinx’s is famous for not having its nose. It is believed that it was shot down during the Napoleonic expeditions to Egypt.
The huge statue, which constitutes a symbol of puzzle and mystery, had to keep on the cemetery in Giza or, as the gossips says, had to guard three Pyramids behind it. In 1400 B.C. Pharaoh Totones IV was trying to dig Sphinx out from the sand. The whole statue is not proportional and has got a lot of time passing and hydric erosion signs.
Inside Sphinx are three tunnels, two of them were discovered in 1881 but opened in 1979. The last tunnel was discoverd in 1926 and haven't been opened so far. Excavations of Sphinx were started by capitan Caigli and completed in 1925.
I didn't know that there were tunnels inside the statue of the Sphinx. Why hasn't the last tunnel been explored yet?
